Everytime I turn on my computer, unused icons such as
local area network and Microsoft Messenger pop up in the
notification area, despite the fact that I have followed
all the steps to customize the area by checking always
hide in the dialog box.

This is not an urgent problem, but it is a nuisance.

Can anyone tell me how to solve it permanently?

Reset the settings. See "How to Clear Past Items from the Notification
Area" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283084).
For Messenger: if do you do not want to use this application:
Start the Messenger and in Tools > Options disable "Run this program
when Windows starts" and "Allow this program to run in the
background". Close the Messenger.
Run REGEDIT.EXE and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Insert a new
DWORD entry
Hide Messenger
here and set it to a value of
2
