nothing will launch

I am using Windows XP Home and nothing will launch. For
example, if I try to launch Internet Explorer, I will
click the icon, the screen will go blank and then nothing
happens. This happens when I try to launch
anything...control panel, my computer, explorer..etc. If
I boot up in safe mode, then everything works fine. I am
at a loss of what to do.

And yes, I did run a virus scan and it found nothing.
