Nothing in device manager?

D

Don Burnette

I was trying to install new catalyst ati drivers, they would not install and
I got an error message that remote procedure call failed.

I went into device manager, and nothing is showing in device manager, no
hardware at all.

I tried a system restore, with no luck, same results.

Any ideas on what I can do from here?

Thanks,

Don Burnette

Start the Plug and Play service.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Plug and Play |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Apply | Click the
Start button | When started, close Services

Don,

Verify the Services configuration - Default settings for services:

Also read this,

"If Device Manager is showing nothing, then Its the plug and play service
that is the problem. But if the Device manager is showing the system_name
and not showing any devices in the window, then check the security
permissions on the Registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM .The
SYSTEM account must have full control permissions on this key in order for
the Device manager to list all the devices in the window."

Thanks Ramesh,

I have gone through all suggestions in the forum listed below, and none have
helped. Everything points to the plug and play service not running. For
instance, on the ATI cat drivers, I can uninstall the Catalyst Control
Center just fine. It will not uninstall the display driver, either through
add/remove or using the Catalyst uninstaller. It gives me an error
initializing. If I try to install the new display driver, I get error
intializing and a message that the remote procedure call failed.

I can remove the ati drivers using Driver Cleaner Pro, and upon rebooting my
system is in std vga 800x600 mode. However, it does not detect new hardware
as it usually does, and trying to install the new display driver again gives
me the error initializing along with remote procedure call failed. Once
again, it appears to point to plug and play service not running.

However, everwhere I check shows the plug and play service is running. I
have checked and reset the permissions, with no luck. I have verified my
running services.

I don't know what could have happened to cause this, I have been out of town
the last 8 days, and this just started when I started up my machine and went
to update my display driver.

It would appear, at this point, I might be better off creating a
slipstreamed SP2 disc for my XP Pro SP1 cd, and doing an in place repair
install.. :(

If anyone has any other ideas, I would sure be interested before I start
doing a repair install.

Thanks,

Ok, got it gang, thanks for all the help.

I had forgotten I had an image of my drive using Drive Image 7, so I went in
and restored an image of my C drive I had from 9/25.

Device Manager works as it should now, and I was able to remove my ati
display drivers and install the new ones.

I do not know what happened to my system to cause this, but thankfully
having that image saved my butt...

Thanks for all the help,

Don Burnette
