XP works exactly the same as 98 in this matter.
What happens when you try?
Can you paste just not save or does the paste function not work?
try using Wordpad instead and see if it works with wordpad.
Post back with more info so you can get more help.

It certainly works the same way and there is no

Well of course you have to type in a filename.
When you paste and then click save it defaults to *.txt if you just click
save without typing in a flename it won't work.
It doesn't work like say Microsoft Word (which defaults to document#.doc)

There is a major difference. XP's notepad is very similar to Wordpad and is based on the Rich Text Edit control (it just won't accept formatting but it can format if the programmers allowed it, it's refusing to format even though it can). 98's Notepad is based on the same thing where you type in dialog boxes (a text edit control in multiline mode).

The main difference is a text edit control can handle 65,535 bytes of data. A rich text edit control handles 2 billion bytes (and can read and make rtf or text files).
Some of the data is control data so max file size is a bit smaller.

True of course.
But I think he's saying that there's no difference between XP's notepad and
98's notepad.

Agreed, but to the question at hand they are the same.
Although the problem has been solved.
It seems it was basically operator error (gee that never happens, lol)
The op wasn't typing in a filename before saving therefore wasn't saving.

There isn't in how one uses it. But there is under the hood.

You/I wouldn't have thought so.
But that definitely seems to have been the prolem.

I had already read that. But noone can be that stupid, can they?
