Notepad Problem

This question may be misplaced, but here goes...
I can no longer open NOTEPAD. When I try I get the
message "The C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\smss.exe application
cannot be run in Win32 mode".

I removed the sasser (i think?) virus a while back and
I'm sure it's related to that. Is there anyway I can
reinstall Notepad without too much hassle?

First, understand that Sasser isn't the only virus out there! If you
didn't then install a current antivirus using updated definitions,
there is a good possibility that your computer is still infected. The
Qaz virus impacts Notepad, for instance. However, if you are absolutely
sure your computer is clean, then there are a couple of ways to restore
Notepad:

1) See if you have a copy of Notepad.exe in C:\Windows\System32 or C
\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and if so, copy the file to C:\Windows;

2) Expand a copy of notepad.exe to C:\Windows\System32 by doing the
following:

Have the XP install CD in the CDROM drive. Go to Start>Run and type
"cmd" without the quotes, Enter. In the command prompt window, type:

expand X:\i386\notepad.ex_ c:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe (where you
will replace the X with the actual drive letter designation for your
CDROM drive) Then press Enter.

3)Exit the command prompt window by typing "exit", then press Enter.
