notepad illegal operation

Every time I select NotePad from my accessories list I
get "the NTVDM CPU has encountered an Illegal instruction"
Any help on this?

Some recommendations seem to indicate un-installing and re-installing the
program. I'd guess it was Notepad itself, although it doesn't show-up in my
W98se add/remove programs>windows set-up tab>accessories list. I don't know
how one would go about un-installing it and re-installing it.
