Suddenly any notepad that I try to open says "Windows
cannot find NOTEPAD.EXE. This program is needed (duh) for
opening files of type 'Text Document'
Type in the executable file to used instead:

So, uhm...like...can I reinstall notepad without
reinstalling all of windows? Is there a download
anywhere? Any ideas why it is suddenly gone? I don't just
delete folders, I (we) use the remove programs feature so
I don't think we deleted it by accident. Any help please?

I would go to another computer that has the same version
of the operating system (Win XP, Win2000), copy
NOTEPAD.EXE from the Windows folder onto a floppy disk and
copy it to the Windows folder on the computer in question.
For Windows 2000 it's probably in the WINNT folder, not
sure, don't have a Windows 2000 system I can look at this
instant. Good luck.

You can expand this file from the original Windows xp
installation discs.
Click Start > Run... > "cmd" > {OK}
From the command line prompt type:
d: [ENTER key] (Where d is the drive letter of the CD-ROM
drive containing the Windows XP installation disc)
cd i386 [ENTER key]
expand notepad.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\notepad.exe
[ENTER Key]

I had very similar problem today.

Somehow "notepad.exe" was done from c:\windows\system32 on my PC.

You might have notepad.exe in "c:\windows". Use Winodws Explorer
and copy "notepad.exe" from c:\windows to c:\windows\system32.

Good Luck!!!!
