notebook inaccessible on Workgroup

I've got two XP Pro machines on a workgroup at home (virtual office) with
my 802.11g router as the hub... when I view all machines on the workgroup
from my desktop, I can see the notebook machine name, but when I try to
access it, I get an error saying: \\MachineName is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this noetwork resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path
was not found.

What does this really mean??? I have admin access (and am logged in as such)
on both machines! Any thoughts or suggestions?

Adittional notes:
-When I try to just VIEW the machines on the workgroup from the notebook, I
get this error: "WorkgroupName is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for
this workgroup is not currently available.".... balderdash!
-Both machines *used* to be able to see each other's share resources with no
problems.. until *something* happened, and I couldn't tell you what!
-Disabling the Norton utilities and XP firewalls didn't help
-removing the resource and re-adding didn't help
-re-running the network wizard didn't help
-I plugged in my friend's notebook into the hub and it could see onto my
desktop machine no problem, but not the notebook, so its definitely
something in the notebook configuration!
-It doesn't matter whether the notebook is connected to the hub via WiFi or
by Cat5 cable - same result
-Actual IP (and all other protocols) traffic to the internet works fine on
both machines

Any input from folks might be appreciated! Its probably something simple and
I'm just frustrated enough to not see it!

sounds like permission or cached credentials issue. to confirm this, use net view \\remoteip. If you receive system error 5, this permission or cached credentials issue. This step by step troubleshooting may help, http://www.howtonetworking.com/Troubleshooting/notaccessibale0.htm
