I have a Netgear wireless router. Connected to it are a cable modem, a
Compaq desktop computer via a cable, and a notebook computer via wireless
network. I have Windows XP Home SP 2 on both. I have run Setup Home Network
and Setup Wireless Network Wizards.The work group is named Satya Apartment on
both computers. When I click on View Workgroup Computers on the desktop
computer, it cannot see any computers. Get error "Satya Apartment is not
accessible. You might not have permission to view this network resource.
Contact the network admin... The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available."

The notebook computer sees only itself on View Workgroup Computers.

I have tried changing the workgroup name, including trying a name without a
space, and this does not help.

The Compuserve support forum thought it may have to do with wether the Guest
account is turned on. I tried turning it on and off, and this did not help.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Satya

Satya,

Check for a browser conflict between the two computers. I"m not talking about
Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that allows any computer to
see any other computer on the LAN. On a 2 computer LAN, only 1 should be a
browser.

Make sure the browser service is running on the desktop computer. Control Panel
- Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Stop the
browser on the notebook computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Once ALL computers have been powered off, power
them back on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win95/w95brows.mspx>

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous, on both
computers.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>
<http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm>
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Satya,

When you disabled the browser on the notebook, did you restart the notebook?

An error 53 is name or resource not found - this can come from a browser
missynchronisation, a name resolution problem, or a misbehaving firewall.

Try setting restrictanonymous on the notebook to 0, then reboot. Make that your
first thing to try.

Is the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled in Windows Firewall?

It's good that you found NIS, but disabling it isn't a guaranteed solution - you
may have to either:
1) Enable then un install, using carefully all Symantec documentation.
2) Enable then configure properly.

There have been multiple cases seen here where choice #1 was the only solution.

I see that both the desktop and notebook computers appear to have 2 network
interfaces. I wonder how name resolution works, when a computer could be using
either of two network interfaces.

If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

<SNIP>

Satya,

OK, I understand your reluctance to un install NIS immediately. Un installing
any Symantec product is a royal pain - my procedure, which I do every year (you
have to un install to upgrade their stuff) is to reformat and reinstall Windows.

This year, I am checking out AVG, Avast, and Kaspersky. Good bye S$.

Anyway, let's enumerate your problems.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Did you copy browstat.exe to a path folder on each computer?

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online.

Again, it seems to show that the desktop sees both computers' shared

In running cdiag.cmd, I first noticed System error 51 on desktop; and System
error 51 and 53 on the notebook onscreen before the text output.

Here's the output, desktop first, then notebook.
Again, it seems to show that the desktop sees both computers' shared
folders, but the notebook sees only the folders I have made shared on the
notebook.

Thanks again,
Satya

OK, I see what I expected. Discussion below the Diagnoses.

Both Satya (aka Louis Bernstein - Compaq P4) and Satya-Prajna (aka Satya) - your
naming convention is scary - resolve their own addresses to 169.254.101.152, but
resolve the other to the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet. Look at the IPConfigs - that is
the address used by the extra network card on both computers. How did they both
get the same ip address?

What is this "WAN Network Driver"? The best choice, as you asked, would be to
get rid of it. If you can't there may be other choices, but try that first.

Possibly because they were each the only computer connected to the cable
modem at a different past time.

What do you recomend to try? Please be specific if it involves IP addresses,
as I don't know how to work with or change these.

What is this "WAN Network Driver"? The best choice, as you asked, would be to

I disabled the WAN driver on both computers.
As a result, the desktop can now only see the notebook in the workgroup.
And the notebook says "Workgroup not accessible"

Current diagnostics follow. Desktop, then notebook.
Thanks.

Possibly because they were each the only computer connected to the cable
modem at a different past time.

What do you recomend to try? Please be specific if it involves IP addresses,
as I don't know how to work with or change these.

I disabled the WAN driver on both computers.
As a result, the desktop can now only see the notebook in the workgroup.
And the notebook says "Workgroup not accessible"

Current diagnostics follow. Desktop, then notebook.
Thanks.

Satya,

Well, having removed the extra network card, all the diagnostics look normal.
Both Satya and Satya-Prajna ping, and net view, each other on 192.168.0.0/24.
And browstat on both shows the master browser to be Satya, with 2 servers in the
domain. There's no pings from 169.254.101.152, and everything is perfect.

Try restarting Satya, then Satya-Prajna.

Chuck,
Yes, you're right the network is working now. I just had to go to properties
for some folders and set network sharing.

In the notebook I set restrictanonymous = 0 and turned off the browser.
Network is still working.

Thanks for all your help and pateince.

Satya,

Thank you for your update. It's good that it is setup properly, and working.
When you're working with the browser, you should remember that any changes you
make may not be seen immediately (there is the mysterious 48 minute latency
period that we should not forget).
