Using XP HE, I want to clone my hard drive to a larger drive in a USB drive
enclosure with True Image. Device Manager recognizes the drive but Disk
Management (But True Image and My Computer) do not. So I can't format the
drive. What should I check now? TIA!

Hi Patrick,
have you made a bootable CD or set of diskettes with TrueImage? This might
sound irrelevant but if you boot TrueImage from a CD it presents you with a
screen that allows you to select several types of driver-including USB
drivers. I suspect that in the Windows environment that TrueImage uses
Windows for driver support, whereas outside Windows TrueImage has to use its
own device drivers. I can't guarantee anything but it might be worth taking
a look at what happens with the boot CD.

Patrick:
You're saying that your USB external HD is not recognized by your system.
Period. It has nothing to do with the Acronis program, right? Whether you're
trying to use the ATI program or not, the system doesn't recognize the
USBEHD under *any* circumstances - isn't that right?

If that *is* the case...

1. We assume, at least for the moment, that the components that make up your
USBEHD are non-defective, i.e., the enclosure, the HD itself, the USB cable.
Has the USBEHD *ever* worked properly in your machine?

2. Similarly, you're connecting the device *directly* to a USB port on your
computer and not through a hub. And you've tried other USB ports as well,
right?

3. You've tried powering-up the USBEHD both *before* and *after* a system
boot, yes?

4. Do you have another PC available that you can connect the USBEHD to?

BTW, you don't have to format the HD prior to a direct cloning operation.
When you clone the contents of your internal HD to the external one, the
formatting process goes along with it.

Anyway, provide additional information along the lines I've indicated above
and we can go on from here if you want.

Thanks, Chelsea. I'll try that.

Anna, you solved it right away. I was connecting through a powered hub.
Using a direct connection worked immediately. Thanks to everyone who helped.
