Not the usual Windows XP Startup problem

Recently my system is having problems starting up. It posts the BIOS screen,
the black Windows XP screen display with the green progress appears and then
it is supposed to go to the log-in screen where I can choose between four
users. The problem is that every now and again, the log-in screen doesn’t
appear. The light blue background does but, but I ether get as far as
‘Windows is starting’ or I can see the user select screen, but I can’t click
on anything. No disk activity, nothing. I do a reset and then it goes in
fine.

There is not pattern to this, it’s very random. I am running Windows XP Pro
SP2 and am fully up to date with updates. I am on a wireless network, but
not sharing any folders to communicating with other systems, it’s just for my
broadband.

Any ideas would a very much appreciated as I am drawing a blank.

I am having the exact same problem, although in my case I am running XP home
edition (also SP2). I recently did a repair install of windows which seemed
to reduce the frequency of the crashes for a while, but it was probably
coincidental.
