Not sure if it is a Restore problem

The "C" drive went bad (I'm told), they took it to a "Computer guy" and he
replaced the drive and loaded XP onto it. He gave them a DVD that has a
folder called "Backup" with folders below it (Cookies, Desktop, Document &
Settings etc.). When I try to open any of the MSWord documents I get pages of
squares, if I open an Excel document I get a box telling me the document is
in "an unrecognizable format". and if I try to open a JPEG I get the message
"no preview available". If I try opening any of these documents on another
machine I get the same results.
So my real question is: where these documents "Backed-up" by XP (one the old
drive), and now need to be "Restored" (but there are no Restore points from
before the disk failure)? Or where these files compressed when saved, and now
I can't get them back (as I think Article 286103 in the Knowledge base says)?
Or what?
Thanx... JTSki...

it sounds like your
primary source for an
answer would be the "computer guy"

it would have been a professional
courtesy, if not included in the cost,
to have restored those items with the repair....

let us know what he says..
