Not responding

I have a user that is trying to open a document that is
on a server. It takes forever if the user uses Windows
Explorer and double clicks on the document. Task Manager
shows the process as "Not Responding". Eventually it
goes back to running and the file opens, but this is many
minutes later. The same document will open just fine if
you start Word first and then use the Open menu item and
traverse My Network Places to open it. Any suggestions
what to check?
 
Check Windows Safe mode with Networking and/or 'winword /safe' mode. Disable
AV, check spyware etc.
