Not operating correctly

Installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled MSAS on WinXP SP1.
All closed including NSW NAV. Problems:

1) All 3 security agents are active, but:
a) Sys summary: 2 of 3 active, real time protection.
b) internet agent status inactive (host file agent) -
click on activate and no change. Still 0 of 1 checkpoint
monitored
c) system agent 25/25 enabled active. Manage: inactive
0 of 0.
d) App agent 25/25 enabled, active. Manage: inactive
0 of 0.
2) All settings are checked
3) a) System explorer - left column blank
b) advanced file analyzer does not appear on advanced
tools screen.
4) Read elsewhere and copied vba6.dll from common
files/msft to MAS & changed name to vbe6.dll. (Left
vba6.dll in common files.)
5) Manage Schedule will not open if clicking from main
screen. Need to go to Tools to open.

When you say that NSW and NAV are closed, are you certain that no services
relating to those products are still running?

M

No, I merely turned off NAV. Rather than shutting all down
in NSW as well as unchecking in msconfig (or changing to
manual in Services), can MSAS be installed in safe mode
where nothing should be running?

It can't be installed in safe mode, but it can in diagnostic mode as defined
via MSCONFIG.

Start, run, msconfig <enter>
Check off diagnostic mode.

Disconnect from the Internet if you are using a third-party software
firewall.

Restart, sign in as an administrator on the machine, and try the install.

Please ensure that none of the gc*.gcd files are left in the install
directory when reinstalling.

OK, here's a lengthy all-inclusive reply:
1) Not certain what you mean by "install dir" to look for
gc & gcd files. I've looked in win/temp and D&S/user/temp
and found nothing. Of course, in the installed MSOS dir
there are several such entries.
2) Install in diagnostic mode resulted in a somewhat
better install, although nothing to brag about -- perhaps
these problems are with the program? FYI, at first it
would not install, had to reinstate Windows Installer in
Services. Also received window, "An access denial error
was returned while attempting to change a svc. You may need
to log on using admin accdt to make the specified change."
Don't know what caused it, but it did not interfere.
3) Setup: Hosts: in-acctive off/checkpoint 0 of 0 -
cannot click on line at lower right to activate.
Sys agent: blank screen as before. inactive 0 of 0
App agent: browser hijack ok; task tracker ok;
advanced file analyzer not included in Advance list, but
opens from Tools.
4) Help now operates fully (didn't before).
5) Only 1 security agent was active at start. Activated
the other 2 from Real Time Protection window. 18 agents
enabled. Internet 25 of 25 active, yet still 0 of 1 (hosts
file (perhaps not yet used due to cookies not yet used?)
Same for the other two; it's as if that second widow is dead.
6) Spyware scan schedule - blank in summary screen
although scheduled for 2 am daily when I had set it for 10
a.m. Again set it for 10 a.m. and it read 112:00:00 a.m.
Run full sys scan again not checked. Rechecked and it
didn't stick. So ran a scan to see if it changes anything
(it read deep scanning during the scan). Changed the scan
schedule to weekly/friday/1700 and the scheduling took.
7) Then reset msconfig services and startup. In
retrospect believe it would have been easier to do as you
first suggested, to turn off all NSW svcs. However, we
must bear in mind, that the average user will not go
through this.

Wow--that's quite a list. Some of what you note--the scheduler time
issue--are known bugs.

I don't have any workarounds for you. Symantec doesn't have a trial version
of NSW 2005 available, so I haven't been able to test with it myself, but
there's been enough traffic about this here that I'm sure Microsoft's staff
have been able to look at this.

Please check these things again when another beta build is released.
