not hearing system sounds

system sounds like asterisk, windows start, notify are all not playing. if i
go to sound properties and try program events, the play button is gray and
unable to play sounds. my sound card is realtek AC97, i reinstalled the
driver, rolled back, reinstalled the directx but nothing helps. any help
please?

and click on it. If no go, check the audio drivers.
