Not enough server storage is available to process this command

Hi,

Two almost identical PCs, both running WinXP Pro + SP2 + all latest patches
from Windows Update etc. One has 2Gb RAM, the other 4Gb.

Bog-standard ethernet network, both members of the same workgroup, both can
see IP-connected printer, both can connect to the Internet through router /
cable modem etc.

However, yesterday, one of the machines (the 2Gb one) was suddenly unable to
connect to any of the shares on the other machine... As far as I am aware,
nothing has changed on either machine...

When browsing the workgroup, the shares are listed as normal, but clicking
on any one of them displays the "Not enough server storage is available to
process this command" message.

A search on Google suggested modifying the registry to add the IRPStackSize
key to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\lanmanserver\Parameters - I did this to
both machines and rebooted them both, but to no avail.

I'd be grateful to know what to try next.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Chuck,

Thank you for your reply.
When it comes to IRPStackSize, you have to be precise, persistent, and
patient.
The value for IRPStackSize takes experimentation.

Hmm - OK, looks like I've got a bit of tweaking to do...

AAMOI, you mention that some people have had to set the IRPStackSize to a
value as high as 48 to solve this problem - would there be any issue in
setting it to something like 100 and then just leaving it...? Does setting
this value very high cause any problems...?

Mark,

I've asked that question myself. The only useful answer was "... Try it and see
.... ". The "..." bit was interesting, but I didn't understand all of it, so all
that I can say is

Try it and see.

And let us know.

I've set it to 100 on both PCs - still doesn't work...

Presumably, there's no point in setting it lower than that e.g. 99, then 98,
then 97 etc... If it doesn't work on 100, it won't work on a lower number,
right...?

Is the name spelled right? IRPStackSize.
Yes.

And Data Type of Reg_DWord.
Yes.

And it goes on the computer that you can't access, in registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters.
Yes.

And the allowed values are 11 - 50, for Windows XP.

Ah - didn't spot that... Will set it to 50 and take it from there...

Is the name spelled right? IRPStackSize. Spelling and case of letters are
critical. And Data Type of Reg_DWord. And it goes on the computer that you

Services\ LanmanServer\ Parameters. And the allowed values are 11 - 50, for

I hadn't either (see my answer above).

As a wise guy says elsewhere:
"If you don't understand, RTFM.
If you do understand, RTFM anyway."

Well, there you go! Set it to 50, and now it works again :)

Thanks once again for all your help.
