Not enough memory? I disagree

This is confusing me greatly, and I hope someone can and will help me. I am
trying to open a 131KB Microsoft Word file, with Microsoft Works, and I am
getting a "not enough memory" error. I opened task manager to see my memory
usage, and it says, "Commit Charge: 291M/3945M." Why does it say I can't
open a 131 KB file when nothing else is open, and I have 2 GB of RAM? Please
help me. All of the troubleshooting files I can find say, "close any open
programs" or something to that effect.

It's their favourite error message, they use it for everything. It almost certainly doesn't mean you have a memory problem. Search product support for both office and works with
"not enough memory"

Causes are many and varied.

Do you have a problem opening the same file with MS Word instead of Works?

If you can't open it in Word, it seems as if the file might be corrupted. If you can
open it in Word, it seems the Word file might be too complex for Works to handle.

What version of Microsoft Works?

Is it using the Microsoft Works word processor component or do you
have a "Works Suite" version that includes Microsoft Word as the word
processor?

This type of problem with Microsoft Word is often associated with a
corrupted normal.dot document template file and the fix for that is to
delete the file as Microsoft Word will create a new one automatically.

But the Microsoft Works word processor does not use the normal.dot
template file.

Good luck

In response to the replies: I don't have MS Word, so I cannot try that
solution. I have MS Works v7.0. I don't think the file is corrupt because I
was able to open it with Wordpad.

To David Candy: I tried searching product support and could find nothing.
Perhaps you could point me to some articles.

I have my own copy of PSS but mine excludes home products like Works. Works uses the same text convertors as Office.

In general it can be caused by corrupted document (and the fact another program can open the doc doesn't mean it's not corrupted), corrupted files (convertors, proofing tools, etc), or corrupted settings.

I might point out you haven't said what type of document or what versions of the programs you are using.

I can't find any specific to your specific problem with regard to
Microsoft Works 7. I can find a similar problem that occurs with a
much earlier version of Microsoft Works when opening larger files that
contain bitmap graphics.

Can you provide the complete *verbatim* text of the error message from
Microsoft Works?

If you can open the file in WordPad then try using the "save as"
function in WordPad to save the file under a different name. Then try
opening that new file with Microsoft Works.

Good luck
