not enough memory errors - Excel 97 - Win 2000

Using large workbook with 8000+ rows & 50+ cols.
10 cols of calculations including lookup tables on another
sheet within this workbook.
Have "Freeze panes" turned on, to see top & bottom.
Totals at bottom of columns.

SOMETIMES, during recalculation, excel freezes up,
displays "not enough memory" error, then closes down.
Task manager indicates only 225Mb of 1024Mb is being used,
CPU running at 100%.

No charts anywhere in this workbook!

Any suggestions for a cure?
