not downloading MSN/Hotmail after upgrading

I recently upgraded from OL98 to OL2003 and for the most part
everything is working fine. But my MSN/Hotmail account is not
downloading messages. With OL98 I was successfully using POP/SMTP
servers to send and receive my mail. The same POP/SMTP account info I
used with OL98 came through when I installed OL2003 but I've never
been able to receive messages (I get a message saying the connection
to the server was broken). With OL2003 I understand I can use HTTP
service so I set up an account to try and access my mail that way but
still no success (the message this time is server not available). Any
tips on what I need to do to get a successful download?

I saw another string in this group on a similar subject (Why can't I
get my Hotmail account linked to Office/May 8) which raised a couple
of questions relative to my situation.

In that string it was noted that free Hotmail accounts cannot be
downloaded. How can I tell if your account is free or not? I think
mine is not free (it comes bundled with my DSL access from my telco)
but I assume there is some way I can verfiy by logging in to my
MSN/Hotmail account on the web. The fact that I was able to download
my mail when I was using OL98 would seem to suggest I did not have a
free account.

Also in that string it ws noted that OL2000 did not support Hotmail.
From what I see it appears that OL2003 does support Hotmail. Am I
correct about that?

Not necessarily a valid conclusion, but if you're using POP/SMTP as the
account type, then it's most likely true.

Outlook 2002 and later support HTTP accounts, which is the usual method for
connecting to Hotmail. However, all versions of Outlook support POP/SMTP,
so if that's the way you access your Hotmail account, it should still work.

Well, it might have been a problem at MSN. Both my POP/SMTP and HTTP
accounts are downloading mail now. The fact that the downloading
problem was first noticed after I upgraded to OL2003 may have been
just coincidental.

Thanks for the comments
