I installed Windows XP Pro and am the only user on my computer. I can't install my printer, update drivers, use Device Manager, or do anything! It says that access is denied and to contact the administrator. There is no other visible way to log on, so I can't see if my original logon info was entered incorrectly. I've tried every single suggestion that I've read on here and a few other places. Nothing works. I'm ready to take this XP disc to Bill Gates' office and "plant it" in any available hole!!! I paid almost $300 to be controlled by this stupid OE and I do not recommend it to anyone!

Hi,

when you get to the welcome screen where your username is visible, click
ALT+CTRL+DEL twice. You will get new prompt and under username enter
"administrator" and password that you set for it when you set up your
windows... (did you leave it empty?)...

Then right click My Computer > Manage > and go to "Local users and Groups"
Under Users look for your username (not Administrator) and double click it.
Click on "Member Of" tab and click Add. Enter Administrators and click OK.
Log off and log on with your normal username...

Hey,

You know during the process of installing XP, you would
have created an Administrators password, and also a
default user account.

Which account are you using when you say to can't access
anything? If not the Admin one, try logging into that
and see if you get the same issues.

Also Doug-Knox [MVP] has a tool which allows you to
remove the restrictions from your user account:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm

Download that and fire it up and see if there are
restirctions against your user account.

Also this kind of activity is not a usual out-the-box
occurence, do you have an Anti-Virus package installed
and are Up-To-Date with you patches???

I'm using the only account I've ever put on here. It's the same name & password I originally used. I don't know how to find an "Administrator" account, because I don't have security clearance. I have already downloaded the Doug Knox "fixes", but I still can't do crap! I give up!!! I'm getting this monster off of here & going back to ME, if it will let me.........Thanks anyway!

Hi

Administrator account is created when you install WindowsXP. It is so-called
built-in account and you can't delete it.

If I understand you correctly you get to a screen where your current
username is displayed. If that is so, don't click on your username but press
ALT+CTRL+DEL and under username type in "Administrator" (without " ") ...
Leave password empty and click OK. If you are logged-in follow my previous
instructions.

If you don't have to select any username to login, first select Start > Log
off and then fist follow my upper instructions. Once you are logged-in
follow my instructions from my previous post.

It sounds as though you assigned your user
account "limited" access rights rather
than "administrator" rights when you installed XP.

The only solution I can think of is to reinstall & setup
an account as administrator.

Sorry

Hi,

can you run this command on your PC and post back the result. This will list
all locally created users...

Hi! I logged in with the built in account that has full administrative
access blah, blah, blah. The desktop & everything is different, so I know
it's not the same one I have been using. (Smart, aren't I?!) It still says
that I don't have sufficient security priveledges to view the device manager
or add new hardware. ARGGHHH!!!!!!!

Greetings --

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which
cannot be deleted) and modify the desired account. By design, the only
way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to reboot
into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the
Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.
