Not Allowed Access To Other Network PC's

hello folks. i am trying to set up a home network between a laptop and a PC.
I currently have both machines running XP SP2 and both are connected via
cable to a Linksys router. I have successfully set up my workgroup and both
machines show up when I select Show Workgroup Computers (or whatever). The
problem is that whenever I double click the other computer in the workgroup,
I receive a message stating I do not have permission to access the device. I
am able to ping the lap top from the PC and vice versa and have no problems
accessing the internet. Any suggestions?

TIA, rich

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are generally
caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall; or 2) inadvertently running two
firewalls such as the built-in Windows Firewall and a third-party
firewall; and/or 3) not having identical user accounts and passwords on
all Workgroup machines; 4) trying to create shares where the operating
system does not permit it.

I do not have MS FW enabled on either the PC or laptop or any other firewall
running. the only thing I can think of is the user accounts/password. How do
you set up the user account? Since I'm only running one profile on each
machine that wouldn't be a problem.

Also see:

If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center:

a. If you need Pro's ability to set fine-grained permissions, turn off
Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab) and create identical user
accounts/passwords on all computers.

b. If you don't care about using Pro's advanced features, leave the
Simple File Sharing enabled.

Simple File Sharing means that Guest (network) is enabled. This means
that anyone without a user account on the target system can use its
resources. This is a security hole but only you can decide if it matters
in your situation.
