Not all contacts come up automatically

Carmen Reis

I've imported my contacts file into Windows Mail but something funny is
happening. When I am creating a message and am typing the first few letters
of a contact's name, some names come up automatically just as they did in
the Outlook but not all of them, although I those names are there on the
contacts list. I can't figure out why. In order to add these names I have to
go to Tools, Select Recipient and add their names to the TO field. Is there
a way I can get Windows Mail to insert all contacts names automatically?

No. The auto-complete only works for addresses you type in, not for your
contacts.

This function works better in the newer Windows Live Mail.

Or just click on To: in the message compose window.

Wait a sec. I downloaded a Windows Live Mail application from the
Windows Live suite yesterday. Some clarification may be needed for
Carmen here on this one.

Ron, I don't know your credentials, but no one here is familiar with
your "Windows Outreach Team." Microsoft employees who post in
newsgroups customarily append their display name and sig with "[MSFT]".

Windows Mail is not a "watered down Outlook," it is the Vista version
of Outlook Express.

Windows Live Mail is not a "web-based e-mail client". It is a desktop
email client similar to Windows Mail, with a few optional web enhancements.

Hi Carmen,

My name is Ron, and I’m part of the Windows Outreach Team. I thought
I’d drop in and try to help out here.

First, are you using Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail? If you’re
using Windows Mail (basically the watered-down Outlook) it will only
bring up and auto-complete those addresses which have been typed into
the To line previously, not all addresses in your contacts.

If you’re using Windows Live Mail (the web-based e-mail client) your
entire contacts list should be available as you begin typing in the To
field. It won’t auto-complete, but it will give you the matches and you
can select.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Ron

Gary......

Please answer the question. I am running Vista, 64, Home Premium, SP1,
Window Mail that came with Vista. The problem is the same. The auto
complete does not work. After I add it one time by using the contact list,
it is there until I reboot. It is then back to adding the contacts from the
list, no auto load of contacts. This is a big pain. Thanks, Jim

Windows Mail does not auto-complete from your list of contacts.
It uses a separate list of the last 29 recipients you've sent mail to.

The auto-complete feature works perfectly in the replacement
program, Windows Live Mail, which uses the standard contacts list
for auto-completion.
You are encouraged to upgrade to the newer Windows Live Mail:
