Not all computers show up when you browse network

There are about 50 computers on our Windows 2000 active directory domain running in native mode. All of the computer names show up in active directory (you go into my network places / entire network / directory / domain / computers). The problem is not all of them show up when you browse the network (under my network places / entire network/ microsoft windows network / domain name). I am using DHCP and DNS on the network. It is a single segment network so all the computers are on the same subnet. I can ping each host by ip address and by computer name. Only about 10 computers show up in the Microsoft windows network. All computers are using TCP/IP protocol and have client for Microsoft windows installed along with file and print sharing services. Why are most computers not showing in my network places? Thank you.

On the machines that are not showing up check/ do the following:

- Check to see if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled (under the WINS tab in
advanced TCP/IP properties).
-- If this is disabled enable it.

- Check that the Browser service is set to automatic and is running.
- Check that the NetBIOS over TCP/IP helper service is set to automatic and
is running.
-- If either of these are stopped or not set to auto - set them to auto
and start them.

Normally, it is when File and Print Sharing is not onstalled, but you shaid it
is.

I have seen this behavior at a number of clients, with no explaination.

Is SP4 installed on the DC? Do the workstations have the lastest service pack
for their O/S?

See tip 6291 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com to workaround this
behavior.

Sounds like your master browser is out of date.

Use the browstat tool (browstat status) to find out which
machine is the master browser and then either tickle it or
restart it to force an election war and get the list
updated.

All harks back to the old NT days.....sigh
