not able to use windows update

Greetings!

Installed WINXP Professional on three machines using an Open License.
Machines are not yet a member of the domain - simply a member of the
workgroup until we can bring them over to the client's site and join them to
the domain. Everything was fine. However, went to windowsupdate and was
informed that I was not able to use this feature.

Anyone have any ideas as to why? We do not make use of SUS ( just to be
crystal clear! ).
