not able to run regedit???

Hoping that somebody could help with my problem. I have spent three
hours searching the net and have not found an answer. I need to
change the registration of windows xp and when I run regedit the box
appears for approx. 1/2 of a second before closing on it's own. I
can only get a glimpse of the contents (all file folders appear to be
there.)

I have tried running it from it's .exe program with no success. On my
computer it is listed as regedit.exe followed by numbers and another
file extention .pf. As I have no software that can read .pf files it
will not open.

I'm willing to try almost anything before I take out windows and
re-install it and any suggestion is appreciated.

restart tap f8 until advanced options page

loads

select safe mode with command prompt and type in
regedit or regedt32
