not able to display email field in contact views

Just installed Outlook 2003. When I display contacts (current view = address
cards) the email field displalys the file-as information. If I display a
contact, it's e-mail field is OK. All the views have the same problem if I
add to e-mail field to (customize) the current view.

How were these Contacts created and in what version of Outlook?
Older versions used the familiar name only in the Display As field. New
versions use both the familiar name and the actual address.

More information - contacts were created in OE v6, I usually only used
First-Name name field in OE. Last Name was seldomed used and only by mistake.
I have since discovered information displayed in Outlook for e-mail appears
to be first-name field at time I converted from OE to Outlook - for example
after conversion I changed contact first name from "Aspen-SmithJohn" to first
name John with last name Smith. This results in Outlook contact address list
displaying this contact as Smith, John with email address as Aspen-SmithJohn
(which is not contained in any field in the contact record). If I haven't
changed First-Name, then email is displayed as original firstname.

Aha. Imported Contacts frequently will not behave as expected. You may need
to manually correct their Display As fields and File As... fields after the
import to get them to display as expected.

Contacts possibly created in OE v5.5 which was upgraded to v6, many in v6.
What does the display of the email field have to do with first and last name?
I understand implications of both name fields and file-as having learned
the hard way. Only one contact in my Outlook file displays email correctly.
All the rest appear to display first name at time of conversion - not current
first name- in email field instead of email address.

The Display As field is a derived field that uses the name elements and the
email address from the Contact Record. If those are imported incorrectly the
Display As field will be incorrect.

Hi Russ - I want to thank you for sticking with me on this problem. What we
have here is an error in MS Outlook, but an unusual one as no one else
appears to have reported it. All but one of my 300 plus addresses have the
same problem. I imported address list into Outlook as OE (6) addresses. The
address record for each contact displays correctly (double click on selection
from contacts list or address book) so it looks like the conversion is
correct. Address book displays the email correctly. In contact views I
realize e-mail is a derrived field, but don't know what field of the many, if
any, actually contains the real email address. The "E-mail display as" field
displays blalnk. THIS IS A MOST GLARING ERROR AS ALL MY CONTACT VIEWS
DISPLAY "JUNK" AS AN EMAIL ADDRESS AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE I WILL BE EMAILING.
The fix - select contact, cut email field, repaste it, and save contact (300
times).

I'm not so sure it hasn't been reported before. I rarely see derived fields
behave as expected during an import. The File As... field misbehaves more
often than the Display As field. There's probably some code that could
correct it. It's worth asking in a programming group.
