Not able to access internet via Firefox or IE but have a network connection

I'm not able to access the internet using firefox or IE but i do have a
network connection as this is being typed via RDP and a VPN into my
work computer and I can ping the router and also external ip addresses.

Its not a problem with the router as another machine on the network is
working fine
I'm not even able to bring up the router web page on 192.168.1.1. The
only change I've made recently to the machine was to install a blue
tooth usb stick but it was working after it was installed.
This has me stumped at the moment so any help would be appreciated

Does the other computer on the network have a VPN into your work computer too?
If you have a VPN connection, and you can't get connectivity to the Internet,
I'd bet the first causes the last. If the VPN itself isn't the problem, check
for a firewall that was bundled with the VPN.

Did the problem start when you installed the VPN? Or how long have you been
seeing the problem? And how long have you had the computer, in general?

being able to access the web started this afternoon.
When I'm not connected to the vpn ( with the firewall disabled) i'm
able to ping both ip and domain names on the internet but not able to

Did the problem just start after you used the VPN recently? I bet talking to
whoever supports the VPN, at your work, would be a good place to start. I'm
betting that they added some access policies, to keep the work network secure.

If you can't get any help there, try checking the LSP / Winsock for corruption.
If you do, though, make sure that you know ho to reload the VPN, as I can't
guarantee what the LSP tools will do to a VPN client.

This kind of symptom (typically can ping websites but not browse them) is
often due to LSP problems, as mentioned. A favourite culprit is Google
Desktop Search.

The challenge here is to avoid borking the VPN, which is generally work
required.

Firewalls can also disable a program, not neccessarily an computer/ip address
etc. Also check any other security programs you might have running. Some
security programs like MicroTrend DO NOT disable thw Windows firewall but add
another firewalll on top of everything. If this is the case, disable Windows
Firewall AND Security Center in services.
