...not a valid Win32 application?

If someone could help me with this problem, I would be very
grateful.

I have been working on a friends home-based business
computer and having multiple problems with downloading and
installing software. The computer is a Compaq Presario with
a Duron 700 processor that has been recently upgraded to
run Windows XP. Before the OS upgrade I have installed a
new hard drive and 320 MB of RAM. The hard drive has been
partitioned so the OS is on drive C and Programs on drive
D. I connect to the Internet with a cable modem that
appears to be capped at 118 Kbs. The problem that I have
been having is with many programs that either, 1) don't
completely download because it "is not a valid Win32
application"or 2) can't be installed after downloading
because "it is not a valid Win32 application". These have
been programs which I never have had problems d/l or
installing on other Windows XP machines. Such as Yahoo
Messenger, Spybot, and other common programs. I have tried
downloading and installing to and from each of the
partitions as well as the desktop. I've even tried
disabling the firewall and the anti-virus protection during
downloading and installing without success. Any suggestions?

Good morning Mel,

Does this same behavior happen outside of these programs that you are
downloading? What happens you click on any of the installed program
applications already there or on the desktop?

I have also seen viruses cause behavior like this.

Thanks for replying!

It seems just to be happening with programs that I am
trying to download and install. Every once in awhile I will
be able to download and install programs but it is rare. I
haven't had the problem with any program that is already
installed (word, excel, mozilla)and on my desktop. I keep
my anti-virus (Norton) updated and run a scan often and it
never picks up anything. I have even downloaded program
install files from a different computer and transfered them
via CD-Rs with the same results.
