not a beginner question (help if you can)

I have an ASUS P5N32 sli se delux mobo, an SATA wd 36 gig raptor, a sony
dvd/cd drive (primary IDE master), wd 120 gig hd (secondary IDE master) and I
am getting hung up every time i try to install xp home at the (Setup is
Starting Windows) portion of setup. I have literally tried everything (other
than resetting CMOS and starting over) to get things running. The 120 gig hd
is not functioning as anything other than data storage; the 36 gig hd will
run xp home. The BIOS version is the most up-to-date (2040) for the mobo.
If anyone has any ideas here, please let me know. The only thing I can think
of is that because my XP home disk is not a disk with SP2 on it, it may be
causing the system to hang and time out. Any input is appreciated.

Hi Rob,
Download new drivers for your raptor hdd.. press F6 when prompted during
setup, use the new drivers instead.
Also, try to umplug the 120G hdd, and check your BIOS settings (compare
settings with the manual)
Hope that helps, let us know.

In addition to Marian's comments..... I just recenlty re-installed XP w/SP2
on this PC and ran through the install process 4 ro 5 time 'crashing' at
the same point. It was the 'Detecting Devices' stage.

The typical advice you'd get here is to have ALL unnecessary devices
removed when you do the install. Only the main HD to use, KB, mouse, and
video card. Install XP then add devices back one by one.

That was necessary to do this PC, and I suspect it was the sound card I
have, an older one. When I subsequentially plugged it back in and re-
booted, it found it and all works properly.

I do appreciate your input; however, there are no "drivers" available from
the western digital site for the hard-drive itself. I had tried installing
with the 120gig drive disconnected, still to no avail. I tried running
settings exactly as I have seen them in the manual, with no results. I'll do
it all over if I have to at this point. I was on the phone with an ASUS tech
rep, who said that he would swear that the problem would be fixed if i tried
an install with a disk that had sp2 on it.

yeah, the last installs i tried to do were to the 36gig raptor with only
that, cd drive, vid card, keyboard/mouse installed + monitor. I am really
hoping trying an install with a sp2 version of xp works. if it doesn't, im
goign to lose my mind. I have been tryign to troubleshoot this for two days
straight. Keep the suggestions comin! thanks

The drivers should be either on a floppy disk or on the CD that came
with the MOBO.

That could be it. I just installed a A8N Sli Deluxe mb and it said it
*required* SP2! So maybe yours does too. Just a thought. Make
a slipstream SP2 installation disk. It worked for me. Just Google
Slipstream SP2 and it will give you web sites where it will give
you step by step instructions. Hope this has helped.
