Norton

Back to Norton & Windows XP.

I was told to re-install Windows without Norton, download
Windows updates (after putting up firewall).

My questions are:

1) Does this reformat my disk so I lose everything?

2) Can I re-install Norton AFTER installing the updates?

3) What if I just uninstall Norton?

4) Which anti virus, the, is preferrable to Norton?

Norton told me that there are no conflicts with their
product and it WAS expensive...

Thank you for that. However, there is no reason to be
rude. All of my questions pertained to the use of
Norton, its compatability with Windows XP and its re-
installation.

Please learn how to pay attention to everything that is
written...

LW,
If you know what Windows updates you need, perhaps you
should consider downloading them from the
Microsoft Download Center, save them to your HDD (in My
Download Files folder) and use that as your
method of installing Windows updates.

When installing software, do not remove/uninstall Norton
or any other application.
Just make sure that absolutely nothing is running - no
Norton, no firewall, no anything else.

Find your update you want to install, double-click it and
follow the instructions. Installation
should be done WITHOUT being connected to the Internet,
because your computer will be totally "naked"
and vulnerable while you have your applications
disabled. When the installation has completed, reboot
your computer.

Reboot will re-enable your anti-virus and firewall
protection as well as help assure a satisfactory
installation.

It isn't that Norton is incompatible with Windows. It's
that any anti-virus application and firewall can and
often does interfere with installations of other
software. It's in their nature to be protective.
