Have just installed SWPremier 2005 and have been advised to add Norton
Internet Security 2005 as well. Am running XP Home + SP2 successfully. Have
Ad-aware 6 available but don't want to clog up the system too much if adding
IS isn't necessary. Advice please to a 61 year old fan of XP Newsgroups -
have learned a lot from all you out there.

If you pile on the Norton, you may run into conflicts with Windows and
Norton. You can get good, free, constantly updated firewall and antivirus
programs (thanks Shenan Stanley):

ZoneAlarm (Free and up)

Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) (Free and up)

Outpost Firewall from Agnitum (Free and up)

Sygate Personal Firewall (Free and up)

For antivirus, use the excellent AVG Free Edition:

Thanks for your reply and advice. As I am happy with NSW 2005 and have no
conflicts as yet (!) and SP2 Firewall running which of the stand-alone
firewalls would you recommend to complement the system? The Norton IS 2005
is free to me but I'm happy to take your advice just to make sure I'm well
and truly covered.
Thanks a lot - sorry about the reply delay - it was bedtime in the UK!

Which ever firewall you choose, you will want to disable your Windows
firewall to avoid potential conflicts. (But wait until you have the new FW
installed!) The most popular is Zone Alarm. It has been known in some cases
to affect your ability to surf the Web, so I would try it with the intention
of uninstalling it via Add/Remove programs if it causes any difficulty.
Sygate also gets high marks.

Thanks for your advice. I take it that Zone Alarm is a 2-way FW rather than
Windows one-way?
