Norton Intrusion Detection

Jim Dunphy

Today, like everyday, I did a live update of Norton Internet Security. It
downloaded and installed several components. Now I have discovered that my
Intrusion Detection is turned off and I can't turn it back on. When I
attempt to turn it on I get a popup message reading "Failed to save setting.
Please verify that your Windows account is not restricted."

I have rebooted but to no avail.

Any suggestions on what to do now?

I'm running XP SP1 on a Dell Dimension 4600.

Many thanks,

Jim Dunphy

I had the same problem after running liveupdate. Just ran Liveupdate
again and it works now. Try it!

Hello Jim,

I have exactly the same problem on a custom-made PC with XP SP2, and I
couldn't find a workaround. It's definitely a problem with NIS. Have
you reported the problem to Symantec?

Follow-up: It's fixed now. I just ran LiveUpdate again, and saw that
there are new intrusion detection and ad signatures. After updating I
could turn on the option. Obviously they noticed the problem quick.

Best regards,
Vesko

I have just re-installed NIS 2004 after a problem with LI (fixed) and now
have the same problem, running LI again doesn't work.

Any other ideas?

Using LU hasn't worked on my boss's home pc.

However there is another bug on it - I can select enabling automatic
updates for NIS but if I select what components of NIS I want this auto
update to check for - they are ignored and when i go back to this screen
they're unchecked again.

By luck I found these:
-go to Symantec-support
-search for document 2004042209192236
and document 1999121613163206

Still doesn't work here - no new updates found and the LU options in NIS
itself aren't allowing me to select what NIS components I want LU to
check for as it forgets them as soon as I've clicked on OK

I seem to have fixed my problem.

First, I uninstalled completely, then re-installed. After running LU a
number of times I still had the same problem and could not turn Intsution
Detection on.

I then un-installed/re-installed again, I said 'no' when asked if I would
like to retain a temporary folder of my settings (I said yes the first time).
When NIS asked if I wanted to use windows user accounts I said yes and didn't
change any of the default settings. I then manually downloaded the latest
version of LU from the Symantec website. Next I ran LU a few times but
unchecked 'Symantec Intrusion Detection Signatures' each time until all other
updates were installed. I then checked that Intrusion Detection was on, which
it was, and then ran LU a final time and installed the IDS update(s). this
worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Im running nton antivirus 2002/firewall 2004 to get my intrusion detection ok
again i went to add remove programs>uninstall all norton stuff(inc.live
update live reg etc.etc.)>run search on your p.c using words like
norton/symantec>delete any of those files that appear still on your
system(You'll know when you did it properly as your subscription date will
change to the actual day your doing it.)>restart>install the program
again>run live update>restart when prompted every time>keep running live
update until totally updated. If it doesent work try it again (it took me 3
goes). Works fine now.
