Norton Internet Security

I have recently installed a broadband connection on my PC. I purchased
Norton Internet Security to provide additional protection.

When I set-up NIS I did *not* choose the additional security provided by
separate accounts (for each user) but when I run the program it asks for the
supervisor's password. But I didn't set up a supervisor - nor set a
password.

Now I can't change or remove NIS. I can't even uninstall it using Control
Panel (this also asks for the supervisor's password). Neither can I
re-install it. Help!

This sounds weird. Last week I installed NIS2003 just as you without
Parental controls - and I've never been prompted for any password. Are you
using XP home or pro ? Did you log on with full admin privilege account to
do the install ? Did you install on a standalone machine or from a network
drive ?

Whatever, I think what you need is the NIS Removal Tool for just this sort
of situation. Instructions and download available from here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2001090510510636 .
If you decide to risk the reinstall then a link to further instructions is
also available on that page.

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when I
upgraded to NIS 2003. When your computer boots, which
account is the default account in NIS? If it is the
supervisor account, there is an option to change your
password. If it isn't the supervisor account, try logging
off whichever account is default, and relogging in
as "supervisor" without typing in a password. I remember
that's how I finally got in - I found out that until you
set a password, the supervisor doesn't require one. If
that doesn't work, I would suggest that you contact
Symantec Support - they have free email support - it takes
a while to get a response but you will get one
eventually. The URL is http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/

Remove it and try again.

Thank you very much. This worked fine. I think that I'll stick to the
built-in XP firewall.

Get a copy of Tiny Personal Firewall V2.0.14 or .15.

This is the older version, its completely free, easily set up and
maintained, and it is not system intrusive like Nortons.

You can do a Google search and find it. Two Cows and its mirrors have it for
sure.
