Norton Internet Security slowing down my MS Access Database?

Is there any reason why my Norton Internet Security 2006 would be
slowing MS Access Database (2003) down to a crawl? Accessing menus,
response to control presses, etc. all are like molasses. When I turn
off NIS, Access speeds right back up to speed. Very annoying...

What can I do to prevent this, short of turning off NIS, which I don't
really want to have to do every time I want to use the database.

<sigh>

There should be an option somewhere to stop scanning all files with
certain extensions. Such as MDB, MDE, MDW and MDA. I may be missing
one or two in there.
