Norton installed; now I can't go anything

Hello & thanks for help in advance.

I recently installed Norton 2006 Antivirus software - and when I rebooted my
machine, I was unable to access ANY programs or data. Norton has not helped
with this issue. My icons on my desktop only appear as windows icons -
clicking on any of them results in the message: "This file does not have a
program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association
in the folder options control panel."

But I cannot get ANYWHERE. Clicking on start button and then any program,
including the control panel results in the same error message.

I'm am not too technically inclined - but would appreciate help! I can F8
and get to safe mode or safe mode with command prompt - but don't know what
to do once I get there.

Before anyone else states to remove Norton Anti-Virus *NAX) , I will say that
your problem is not directly related to NAV 2006. I am running NAV 2006 and I
do not have problems.

I agree with Yves. NAV has nothing to do with file associations other than
its own. Something else caused your problem.

I think I would try a system restore in safe mode to a point just before you
installed the Norton. Sounds like something went wrong with the install or
ther's a conflict. You do not have any other AV software on there do you? An
older version of Norton maybe? That stuff would have to be uninstalled before
installing Norton 2006.

When you get into the SAFE MODE, go to the Control Panel (START- Control
Panel) and then the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. Locate Norton Programs and
uninstall.
Do not restart (when asked) yet.
Then go to START - ALL PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - SYSTEM TOOLS
Choose System Restore. Choose restore computer to an earlier time and
locate a restore point that was made before you installed Norton. (Restore
points will be in bold)
After the restore, restart the computer and see if everything works again.
If so, reinstall Norton. Norton is a good program, but if the first
installation when wrong, you would have problems, but then, any installation
can go wrong.
If the computer is not working after the removal of Norton and restoring an
earlier setting, you are looking at a repair installation of Windows.
Write back and you will be given support for the repair installation.

Please tell us more about your computer when your write back. What is the
make and model number of the computer. Tell us if you have a restore disk
that came with the computer or if you have a full Windows XP disk. Did your
computer come with the SP2 upgrade already installed, or did you install
that after you had the computer. The more details you tell us at the first
time, the more we can help.

Ignore personal opinions like "You chose the WORSE program on the planet
!!!!!!" They don't provide any help and they are personal opinions.
