Norton increase in files?

I'm trying to figure out why the number of files that are being scanned
during a full Norton AV scan have increased to over 900,000? I haven't done
anything that I can think of to cause it other than the usual updates on
software. My other programs are still in the same ballpark as far as number
of files scanned. I've emptied my PC of temporary files, (after asking
Norton) by going to "Start" ; "Run" and then plugging in the following
instructions in sequence and then deleting... "temp" %temp% and then
prefetch... The tech said that should do it. Well, after running a scan
after it, it jumped down to under 200 thousand but then afterward, went
right back up to 900,000+ ... Everything is working OK in every other way
and I don't know if this is something that I should be concerned about or
not... ??? Is there a limit as to what is safe? The Norton tech said it was
"fine" (to use his word)?

Noooo.. I clear them every night and with what Norton taught me to do, there
is virtually none when I run the scan... but thanks for the thought....

(http://www.rotebetasoftware.net/wp/freeware/folder-size/), which
prsents a graphical display of which folders are occupybnig what
amount of space on your hard drive. Double-clicking the folder with
the longest size bar opens it and repeats the process for folders
contained within it, and so on. That migh t give you a clue about
where all these files are, which would help in the diagnosis.

and that I have 126 GB Free space.. So, doesn't that mean that my hard
drive is in pretty good shape?

and that I have 126 GB Free space.. So, doesn't that mean that my hard
drive is in pretty good shape?

Can't say what shape your hard drive is in just from the numbers you
provided. You don't need to be an expert to downlaod and run the
program I mentioned. On that page, you click the "Latest version"
link, which is to http://www.rotebetasoftware.net/FolderSize.zip, and
unzip the downloaded file. Just run what it unzips and the rest is
self-evident. However, I would bet your system is loaded with many
zero-byte files and that program wouldn't necessarily lead you to
them.

Maybe your best bet is to download and run CCleaner
(http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/download/be21267d263119ceac00e9ac7e7ff0d4/).
with Cookies, History and Index.dat items under Internet Explorer
unchecked in the Cleaner\ Windows and Cleaner\ Applications tabs. Just
click "Run the Cleaner" after unchecking those items then exit the
program when it's done. Let us know if that helps.

All this is rather moot, as it doesn't identify what created these
files, which also needs to be remedied.
