Norton GoBack vs System Restore

H

herbzee

I recently installed Norton Go Back.

I tried a "system restore" and got this message: "system cannot be
restored."

"Go Back" says it can run with system restore in Win XP pro.

Do I have to disable or uninstall "go Back" in order to run "System
Restore"?

The "go back" program worked just fine, but took much longer than
"system restore".

Any clues??????

I believe that the latest compatible versions of Goback turn off system
restore by default. You don't need, or want, both running at the same time.

Hello, Norton may have set GoBack4 to disable "system restore" upon
installation as the default setting. Enable system restore they both should
work. I know they did on my unit until I disabled system restore. Using
GoBack3 and WindowsXP Home for 13 months +.
take care.

Actually, I don't think that GoBack4 does disable System Restore. I have
them both running with Win XP Home SP2 with no problems. Also, remember
that they do things differently which might explain the time to restore.
System Restore only restores the Windows system file/settings. GoBack
restores the whole drive.

If you have Goback at all (which I would not) I still think you ought to
have SR. They serve quite different purposes. SR is a short term
matter, but particularly valuable in allowing restore of the registry
(contained in every point) over a matter of a few days.

Check Control Panel - Scheduled tasks, and on the Advanced menu if it
says 'Start using Scheduler' click that so it says 'Stop using'.
Scheduler must be active for auto SR points to be made, even though they
do not show as a task.

If you cannot make a point manually, I suggest disabling SR, OK out,
reboot and start it up again

I agree. Plus, if you are running Norton Ghost, you MUST turn off GoBack
(therefore losing all restore points) before using Ghost or you end up
with boot problems. - I've learned from experience.

It is puzzling why Symantec keeps on with GoBack, when Ghost is a much
more efficient solution to preserving system states. I suppose that their
two
acquisitions don't play well with each other. Wasn't GoBack originally a
Roxio/Adaptec product ?. I know that the current Ghost 9 is a re-branded
form of PowerQuest's Drive Image.

I'm not sure I agree. GoBack and Ghost are two different products for two
different purposes.

I don't think that's true with Ghost 9. I have Ghost 9 scheduled to make
automatic backups to a spare drive and GoBack 4 is running all the time. It
was true with older versions.

I installed NSW 2005 Premium, did the updates & ran into the problems.
Found something on the www about the problem. Symantec confirmed the
problem. Told to turn off Goback before using Ghost.
Solved the prob by getting rid of all of NSW from hdd

Hello, Do not know how system restore is setup on your unit.
Would follow Alex Nichol's information. Always excellent information.
In system properties check the system restore tab and see if the box marked
"turn off" is unchecked.
In administration tools - services - task scheduler set "start - automatic",
system restore set " start - automatic" and remote procedure call set "start
- automatic".
Reboot and check for a restore point.
Start - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

take care.

With Ghost 9 backups can be scheduled automatically and I doubt it turns off
GoBack. If it does, it's automatic and it isn't removing the GoBack
history. I've been running weekly backups with daily incremental backups
for a month and never turned it off.

Were you using Ghost 9 or 2003? I think they both came with it.

As with any Norton product the best option is to:
1. Use Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs to remove it completely
from your computer.
2. Use the install CD as a coffee coaster.

Good luck

I kept running into boot probs (circular). I contacted Symantec & they
pointed me to this
http://service1.symantec.com/support/goback.nsf/docid/2002111808132207?Open&src=w
Even though it mentions WIN 2000, it also applies to XP. I have the
latest Ghost & GoBack - actually should say HAD, as the products have
been removed from my HDD. If you get then both to work, I am impressed!
I have used Norton sw since Peter Norton had it. I've put up with a lot
of probs over the years since Symantec had the products, but since I now
run into boot probs using their sw, I have given up on them.

I can appreciate the problem you're having. They can be frustrating. But
I've been running GoBack4 and Ghost 9 for 2 months with no problems.

Doug,

I'm curious..... What version of Ghost and Goback were you using when you
had the problem?

Dave
I'm not sure of the ver numbers as the sw is deleted from my comp - but,
I bought NSW 2005 Premier in Jan 2005 & did LU - so it would have been
the most recent. Tech support was just about non-existent. Poor
comprehension of English; most questions not answered; answers given
that did not have anything to do with the query; waiting 3-5 days for an
answer. There were many problems with the sw, but when the circular boot
probs started, that was enough!
