When I attempt to backup my CD drive in win xp home, the
norton ghost 2003 seems to back it up to a certain point,
and then skips to the "finish". It seems like the ghost
program leaves out a portion of the hard drive. Is this a
bug, or what is going on?

So, have you tried to restore an image to see if it works? Is there an
option in Ghost to verify the image after it is created. You have to try it
to make sure it works. If you don't, you will never have confidence in the
program.

Have you checked the backup using the Ghost verify feature? If it
verifies the backup, it's probably good. Also, Ghost only copies
data sectors not empty ones.
