Norton antivirus " Dazed And Confused"

I am attempting to install my Norton after a clean install
of win xp pro. install failed and said I need NAV upgrade?
I tried to uninstall and reinstall, but when I try to
uninstall in ADD/Remove, says cannot uninstall as live reg
is needed for antivirus.Tried online support from
symantec, and says registry missing or damaged, Perform
unistall and reinstall but cannot....What gives? Dazed And
Confused, Glenn
