Norton AntiVirus 2007 problem - sorry!

MrBill

Hello,

I know, this isn't a Symantec News Group, but I've been having a
problem that neigher Symantec support nor
symantec.customerservice.general have been able to resolve. Since the
level of expertise is fantastic here, and because I know that a LOT of
you use NAV, I thought this might be a good place to post my problem::

I just un-installed NAV 2004 and installed NAV 2007. Everything seems
fine with one exception - during boot I get the following error
message:

From Symantec E-mail Proxy,
A necessary component for the function is mission or damaged. (%s)

My E-mail program is Eudora 7.0.1.0 if this makes any difference. The
good news is that everything seems to be working OK so this definitely
is not an emergency! :)

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Bill

Many of us here actually recommend against using Symantec products, except
the corporate AV version.

Oh? Which antivirus do most of you recommend then?

NAV is a resource hog. Despite this, it doesn't do as good a job of
detection as most of the others. NAV sends tenacles everywhere; thus it is
very hard to remove.

The usual suggested programs are Kaspersky and Nod32.

I'll jump in to point out that although I too recommend against Norton (and
McAfee), opinion is divided on which of the several others is best.
Personally I like Avast.

That was one of the first things I tried! Their removal program left
over 100 files behind and about 1,000 registry entries. I removed all
the files and was in the act of removing the registry entries with
RegEdit, when I crashed the system . . . I must have fubar'd the
Registry! Fortunately, I keep good backup. :)

I think that removing all the bad files and registry entries may solve
the problem, but it will take a LONG time to prove this. Hopefully
someone knows a simplier way.

You can completely remove all traces of Norton by downloading the SymNRT.exe
file from their web site to your hard drive and run it..
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005103109480139

When I ran it the removal was total, after re-installing Norton the
subscription date was as if I had installed a new copy with a full year plus
on subscription renewal.

Notes:
1) You should also delete any remaining Symantec directories.
2) It has been reported that this utility does not always do a total
removal.

I received an E-mail from Symantec tech support stating that NAV2007
is NOT compatible with Eudora 7! So NAV2007 is going back for a
refund and for now I'm going to try the Zonealarm Security Suite which
includes an antivirus program. This new program should mesh smoothly
with my Zonealarm firewall. :)
