msconfig & NAV Window Disappears

When I go to START, RUN, and type msconfig, the Configuration Utility Window appears, but only for 3-5 seconds and then disappears. I discovered this on 01/26 when I became aware that my Norton Anti-Virus 2004 Professional Software wasn't running. When I double-clicked on the NAV icon, the window appeared, refreshed, showed Auto-Protect: OFF and E-mail Scanning: ERROR. Then the window disappeared. I went to the Symantec site and did everything directed, which is when I discovered that the Configuration Utility Window would not stay opened. I have also started in SAFE MODE and NAV works just fine. While in SAFE MODE I started NAV, ran a Live-Update and Full System Scan....no viruses found. Everything else works just fine on my computer, no other problems....I'm just really nervous because NAV is not running. Any thoughts?

Hi George,

You can do an online scan of your machine at any of these places.

Go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp)

Or (http://housecall.antivirus.com )

Or: http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Or:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

You may find out what is disturbing your system.

Also, when you run the Task Manager, do you notice any unusual
processes?

Good luck.

A number of people have had problems running certain programs like that and I
haven't seen any solutions suggested for it.
I have found a number of programs that will shut down seconds after you run
them including msconfig.exe and regedit.exe.

The most common one that people notice is msconfig.exe.

I recently installed XP onto a clean HD (new and just out of the sealed
package) using the XP disk to format the HD. Without any 3rd party software
installed msconfig was already doing that.

Configuration programs of various sorts seem to encounter this problem mostly
from what I've seen so far though it isn't limited to just configuration
utilities. A simple old DOS puzzle game also shuts down within seconds of
starting.

Since so many people have been running into this problem I am surprised that no
one seems to know how to fix it.
