Norton Anti Virus (NAV) and LiveReg shared component updates -> what arethey for?

I've just re-installed Norton System works 2002 for the second time on
my PC to re-activate the 1 year virus def updates.

Every time I do this, I wonder what the LiveReg update is, or more
specifically what it does, and what the "Shared Component Update"
does.

I see that there are 2 such updates for NSW/NAV 2002: One is 16.6 kb
and the other is 1925.6 kb.

Not downloading them doesn't seem to affect any functionality of NAV
or it's ability to detect and download other items such as virus def
updates, re-directors, etc.

So what does LiveReg do? Do I have to download it? What happens if I
don't?

I think it just sends your registration info to Symantec every time
you install another component of Norton without making you wade
through the Name, Address, Phone etc every time. Its nothing to do
with the software. So you only have to fill in your info for the first
Norton application you install after which it registers automatically
and quits nagging.

I filled in some rubbish address and phone just to stop it appearing
as available under the live update bit and asking me if I wanted to
register. Ignore it if you want it makes no difference AFAIK

It's part of Symantec's Paranoia Works. It seems that they are more
interested in making sure that a user registers software than having
programs that work well.

They've had 3-4 versions of LiveReg over the past year and a half! At
1.5 to 2MB D/Ls no thank you.

I registered NAV 3.0 in 1995 - silly me! It took 5 years to get of
their mailing list etc. !
