No new virus definitions for weeks

Terry Pinnell

I've had no helpful responseto my enquiries in the Symantec groups, so
wonder if someone here can help please?

It's now several weeks since LiveUpdate downloaded anything new. Each
time I open NAV (part of SystemWorks 5.0) and manually initiate LU,
I'm told all my Symantec programs are fully up to date. I renewed my
subscription some months ago, so that can't be the problem.

Norton AntiVirus 2002
Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions
Norton Ghost 2002
Norton SystemWorks 2002
Norton Utilities 2002
SARC Submission Software Updates
ScriptBlocking
Speed Disk
Symantec Common Driver: SymEvent
Symantec Redirector

Surely this cannot be so? Have the virus writers gone on indefinite
leave, or what?

Perhaps your old Norton Antivirus 2002 virus definition
subscription has now expired...

What part of that statement did you have trouble with?

Terry,

Since the malware writers focus on the biggest game ( NAV,
McAfee, etc. ) there is the possiblity that your ability to update
has been denied. Best to do an online scan at other AV sites or
download a standalone scanner to ascertain if this is the issue.

Online virus scans
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Online spyware scans

http://www.pestscan.com/

AV downloads
http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp ( Get the Syclean
package and READ the readme_sysclean.txt. )

NAV2002 is quite old. You would better be served by upgrading. Two
years is a long time in the virus world. Sorry I can't help with your
question about the update though.

As long as your subscription is up to date, you can log on directly to
the Symantec site and download the virus definitions yourself. I can
tell you positively that something is wrong. The virus definition
files are the same for NAV 2002, 2003, and 2004. NAV definitions were
downloaded today by live update on my system. Dated Sep 17th.

Look for the intelligent updater and use it to install the new
definitions. Go here:

Possibly caused by virus/malware that has the ability to hinder well
known a/v products. I suggest you get one of the many available
free/free trial a/v programs, update and scan in Safe Mode. Also get
Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware, update and scan with both.
