Norton 2005 Firewall comments

Thanks to those who responded to my question on July 7th on Norton
Anti-Virus 2005 acking as a firewall. There seems to be a variety of opinons
on that but Norton has since then assured me that their 2005 program does
indeed act as a firewall as well as an Anti-Virus software and unlike Windows
XP's firewall it monitors the behavior of outgoing network traffic. The
program did ask me if I wanted the "worm" feature and I agreed and it did
turn off the windows firewall to avoid conflict. I asked about installing
ZoneAlarm as well and was told there was no need to do that and it might also
conflict with Norton. I have always trusted Norton (actually more than
Microsoft) so we'll see ...
Thanks again,

fred

I have customers (quite a few actually) who are running Norton AntiVirus
2005 along with the latest version of ZoneAlarm without any problems.

I'm afraid you've misunderstood them. No version of Norton
Anti-Virus acts as or includes a firewall. However, the larger
package, Norton Internet Security, includes both Norton
Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall.

The program did ask me if I wanted the

Then it would appear that you are running not just Norton
Anti-Virus, but also Norton Personal Firewall, as part of Norton
Internet Security.

I asked about installing ZoneAlarm as well and was

with
Norton.

Correct. Assuming that you're running Norton Personal Firewall,
you should not also run ZoneAlarm.

I have always trusted Norton (actually more than Microsoft)
so we'll see ...

Many folks here will strongly disagree, and feel that your trust
in Norton is very much misplaced.

Just a note to add to Bruce's comments - Norton Antivirus 2005 includes
something called "Internet Worm Blocking" which is a simple firewall
just like the Windows Firewall that comes with XP Service Pack 2.
Certainly Zonealarm is a more full-featured firewall than either NAV
2005's Internet Worm Blocking and the Windows Firewall. If you are
comfortable configuring a firewall, the better choice of the three
firewalls is Zonealarm.

I'm completely in agreement with Bruce that I wouldn't trust Norton at
all. To put it bluntly, I think the last good av program they wrote was
NAV 2003 and even that was fragile. NAV 2004 and 2005 suck.
