normal template not accepting changes

Any changes I make to my default settings in word last only throughout the
current session. Once I close the program and come back in to it later, all
defaults have returned to those in place after initial install. All macros
disappear as well.

Is Adobe Acrobat 7.0 installed on the computer? If so, the Acrobat 7.0
Create Adobe PDF toolbar add-in for Word prevents Word from automatically
saving changes to the normal.dot template (which is also where Word stores
macros unless you tell Word otherwise). Set the defaults and create the
macros again, and click "Shift+File | Save All" to force Word to save the
normal.dot template. Alternatively, you can prevent the add-in from loading
as described in the last section of

the PDF toolbar if you do this.
