change default language in normal dot

My default language in the normal dot file has changed to Welsh for some
reason, so the spellchecker won't work in any new Word doc. This seems to
affect writing in Outlook as well. Office is set to English (UK) but
whenever I try to change to English (UK) in the normal dot file it just
reverts to Welsh, despite warning me that the 'change will affect all new
docs based on the normal template'. The new default instruction just refuses
to take effect. It's driving me mad! Could it be some kind of Welsh
nationalist virus? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
