Normal.DOT

Edward Leather

Every time I open Word the same message keeps appearing: "The global
template, NORMAL.DOT, is already open as a global add-in program." What
does that mean and how can I get that message to stop appearing each and
every time I open the program?

It means that you have two or more copies of normal.dot in play. Search your
hard drive for this filename (it's a hidden file) and delete or rename any
except the one in the folder indicated at tools > options > file locations >
user templates. While you are at it, search for orphaned temporary files -

This means you have a copy of Normal.dot in your Startup folder.

Take a look under Tools/Options/File Locations and note the following
locations.
User Templates
Startup

These paths for these folders should not be the same. Word will create
the Normal.dot in the User Templates folder and if both your User
Templates and Startup folder are same then you will need to modify one
of the locations to point elsewhere.

Typically Word will use the following defaults however this depends on
your operating system:

User Templates: C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
Startup: C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

If you have customized your Normal.dot and wish to retain your
modifications then it should be placed in your User Templates folder.

Otherwise as Graham suggested, exit Word and search for Normal.dot and
delete/rename those you find. Word will create a new upon starting.
