Normal.dot file

When closing Outlook, I get the error message "The file
Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the
existing file?"

I have uninstalled and re-installed, and deleted this
file as well, but cannot eliminate this message.

Thanks for any help ...

This means you've made changes to the default Word template like margins,
font settings, printer settings etc... Choose Yes to save the changes and
see if it's gone now.

Do you know what the file Normal.dot is?

Normal.dot is a specific file that saves things like styles, fonts,
margins macros etc. When you start a new document what you see before you
do anything is Normal.dot. It is important enough that Microsoft keeps more
than one copy on your computer, hiding as best it can the copies to keep you
from messing with them.

Normally any new document you create is called something.doc It sounds
like you somehow asked Word to edit Normal.dot and it wants to make sure you
really do want to save the changes. Normally you should only edit and
create documents and they use the doc extension not the dot. You may want
to check to make sure you are working with documents (doc) not templates
(dot).

I hope that helps.

One other note. The Normal.dot is a Word file not an Outlook file.
Outlook is using Word as it's editor in this case.
