Normal.dot default styles

I have a Windows 2000 PC and I use Word 2003, recently upgraded from Word
2000. I have searched for this answer in the MVP sites and newsgroups and
cannot find it. What styles should be in the normal.dot template?. I cannot
find a normal.dot template on my machine when searching for it in Windows.
It displays, however, in Word's Tools | Templates and Add-Ins | Organize
view. In that view, the normal.dot template has many styles that were
mistakenly added to it. Once I know what styles should be in the normal.dot
template (and remove the extraneous ones), I can begin re-creating new
templates for the several types of documents we write here. (The current
templates came from this "corrupted" normal.dot template.) Thank you in
advance.

Hi Linda-

If you are certain that the styles should not be there, have Word gewnerate
a new Normal.dot:

Make sure Word is not running.

Since location may vary, use the Windows Search feature, but specify
including "Hidden" files. When you locate the file, *Do Not* delete it! Just
rename it as OldNormal.dot or something similar.

When you launch Word it will create the new Normal.dot file based on
original specs.

First, normal.dot has many styles that you will probably never use. It is a
catch-all and the styles you are seeing may be in the original.

Second, you do have a normal.dot if you are running Word; on many systems
normal.dot is hidden. You must have your Windows folder view options set to
show hidden and system files (and preferably to show extensions for known
file types). When you are doing a search in Windows for a file, you may need
to specify that you want to find hidden or system files.

Follow the instructions to generate a new normal.dot at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm to see a fresh
normal.dot.

And note that you don't have to actually open Normal.dot to see what styles
are in it. Once you're sure you're dealing with a default copy, any "Blank
Document" you create will contain those styles, which you can see by opening
the Styles dialog or in the Style box if you press Shift while clicking the
down arrow. To get to the Styles dialog, select Custom at the bottom of the
Styles and Formatting task pane, then click Styles... in the Format Settings
dialog.
