Styles via addin document template

The way I read Word documentation, addin .dot templates take precedence over
normal.dot. In my case, the reverse seems to apply - addins have no effect
on styles included in normal.dot.

I have tried placing the template in either the Word Template folder or the
Startup folder, and activating it via Tools/Addins and Templates. The only
way I can get the desired styles is to open a document that includes the
styles.

I would like to keep a group of special styles separated from normal.dot.

That's correct - add-ins do not provide styles. If you want to change styles
attach the template with the revised styles and check the automatically
update styles check box in the templates and add-ins dialog or use the style
gallery.

What you are seeing is normal. A document cannot access a style from
an add-in.

Create a specific template for your styles, and then create documents
based on it whenever you need to use those styles.

Have a look at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/WhatTemplatesStore.htm and
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/templaterelations/index.html for a better
understanding.

Add-ins _do not_ supply any styles to a document, much less "take
precedence". They do supply AutoText entries, keyboard shortcuts and toolbar
customizations, and macros.

The styles in a document come from whatever template was used as the base at
the time the document was created. If you want a specific set of styles that
don't appear in normal.dot, create a template that contains those styles
_and base new documents on that template_ through the File > New dialog.

Graham, thanks for the unbelievably fast response. I guess I was reading
somethiing into the Word documentation that wasn't there. Thanks for setting
me straight.

Stefan, thanks for your, and others, unbelievably fast response. Like I told
Graham, I guess I was reading my hopes into the Word documentation.

Jay, like Graham and Stefan, you have responded, in my book, in record time.
I guess what I will look into next is auto-opening the template when Word is
started. Thanks again, guys!

You are welcome.

FWIW, from me you get a fast reply (a) when your question is clear,
(b) when I know the answer, and (c) when we're online at the same
time... :)
